I wonder how many people will hear curious phrases like this and try to find their origin. Both had. They also both knew what it meant for the most part (i.e. don't follow blindly). But when I asked if they knew how the phrase came to be, my son (who is 32) had a vague idea (about a cult, but nothing specific) and my daughter (who is 29) had absolutely NO IDEA it was based on anything. Well, they both know now. :)Stacy McKitrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07898731847653710759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8281000668036619727.post-55230789756632646612014-06-22T08:39:48.455-04:002014-06-22T08:39:48.455-04:00Nick--indeed, it is. It's awful there are people who don't know what it was. (Ignorance is doom.) I've never heard of the New Jersey Devils though, so that's a new one. Hockey team or baseball? Basketball? Soccer? I'd heard of the Jonestown massacre, but hadn't linked the two. Quite an innocuous phrase for such a haunting origin.Nick Wilfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03841776353790635132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8281000668036619727.post-73747327568021763642014-06-21T07:03:07.243-04:002014-06-21T07:03:07.243-04:00Stacy--good question to ask. I have a book around here somewhere that explains the origins of a lot of older sayings. Luanne G. And don't hang around (dangerous) crazy people, especially if they scare you. Or maybe that's too late.
